how badui was made
the idea
- i lurked on r/baduibattles for a long time, and at some point i wanted a collection of my own
- the twist is that everything around the bad ui is good ui - quiet, smooth, and it does exactly what it says
- it started as pure function - a box around whatever you point at, reading back what the code says it is, no springs at all
- then it got a body, so it trails you, stretches as it moves, and lands a little past the edge
- then it got a personality, because a guide can’t just tell you things, it has to be a little snarky about it
- eventually it moved out and became lilbuddy, a pet for your mac’s pointer
- the buttons had to run away in style, and they had to run away cleverly
- so it’s a real spring that overshoots, and it checks eight spots and runs to whichever one is farthest from you
- a little buddy that follows your pointer around, and when it catches up, it eats it
- a phone number you have to dial, all ten digits, with no way to take one back
- a map of middle-earth under fog, and only the ground around your pointer clears
- clever and style, both, every time - badui is where that started, and every site since has followed it
